David Haye's bite must match his bark in heavyweight showdown with Ruiz

David Haye is usually known for his motormouth persona, and famously called his last opponent Nikolay Valuev "the ugliest thing I have ever seen. I have watched Lord of the Rings and films with strange looking people, but for a human being to look like he does is pretty shocking".

6 Critical Technologies for Combating Targeted Attacks

Cybercriminals plotting targeted hack attacks can take their time becoming familiar with a company. They can perform network or physical reconnaissance. They may be present or former employees, or they may have access to the company's facilities every day through supply deliveries, consulting activities, maintenance services -- or just by pretending to be customers.
Hiring a professional penetration tester is often a humbling experience. Using a mix of simple social engineering and technology savvy, a professional is often able to expose dangerous security holes in an organization's IT infrastructure with ease. In a few days, a penetration tester can identify security vulnerabilities overlooked by the IT staff.

Bean: An Open Source Mac App That Grows On You

Bean has sometimes been called a rich text editor, but that doesn't do this app justice. Granted, Bean isn't meant for writers with heavy-duty document demands or very specific graphical needs. But with features like minute-by-minute autosave, direct access to dictionary and thesaurus listings, full-screen mode, and something called "the Inspector," it's much more than a rich text editor.
Word processing isn't what it used to be. With the rise of the Web, the need for feature-gorged programs like Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Word have diminished. On the other hand, for many scribblers, barebones text editors are just too limp to satisfy their needs. That gap between bloated and feeble applications has opened a very comfortable niche for an offering like Bean.

Next-Gen Linux File Systems: Change Is the New Constant

With support for over 50 file systems, excluding user space implementations, GNU/Linux has been extremely successful at supporting file system innovation. That success has no doubt been aided by open source development. However, the storage industry is experiencing major architectural changes, and understanding emerging file systems -- and how to apply them -- is critical to keeping up with today's demands.
Changes impacting storage are taking place at every layer of the network architecture: Disk drives are continuing on a Moore's law-like cost/capacity curve, yet concurrently we are also seeing the growth of solid-state technology to overcome the inherent performance limitations of mechanical disk; virtualization is changing how architects think about storage, as we now have operating systems running entirely in user space within a virtual machine; and applications are choosing HTTP over FC as the preferred storage protocol.

Net Neutrality Will Score a Net Win in Congress

Comcast's victorious appeal in a federal court regarding its network management techniques will not be the death of the Net neutrality crusade as we know it. Now it's Congress's turn to get involved, and in doing so, it'll actually give more power to the FCC. But if there's one thing that needs to change about the Net neutrality debate, at least for the sake of politics, it's the name.
The DC federal court of appeals didn't actually bring about the death of Net neutrality. Hopefully, all it's done is bring about the death of the phrase "Net neutrality."
I write about technology, and I'm already tired of hearing those words and writing them. Not the concept behind it, mind you, or the implications for broadband development, "pipes" management, thorny regulatory issues involved or the politics that pit an activist FCC against a corporate giant. All that continues to be ripe material for a tech columnist, and I look forward to seeing how this all plays out in Congress.

Google Earth Helps Scientists Unearth Possible Human Ancestor

Google has become synonymous with "search," but the discovery of the fossil remains of a previously unknown species of hominid gives new meaning to "googling." The scientists who found the treasure used Google Earth to locate unexplored cave sites and fossil deposits in South Africa.
Scientists on Thursday announced the discovery of a new species of hominid, thanks to fossils whose whereabouts were located with the help of Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Earth.
Dating back almost two million years, Australopithecus sediba was discovered in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site in South Africa. The species appears to have had long arms, like an ape; short powerful hands; and long legs capable of striding and possibly running like a human.

Apple's Game Center Tilts the Playing Field

During Apple's iPhone OS 4 presentation this week, gamers' ears perked up at one point in particular: the mention of a new social platform called "Game Center" for the mobile operating system. Details about Game Center are still scarce, but the fact that Apple has targeted social gaming raises questions about how dangerous these moves might be to players like Nintendo and Microsoft.
Gaming enthusiasts who gobble up every tidbit of news they can about consoles, gadgets and titles didn't have a lot to digest Thursday when Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) revealed that the new iPhone OS 4 would include Game Center, a social gaming network. The news was just one feature mentioned in the overall update for the smartphone operating system; Steve Jobs' company certainly didn't unlock any new levels in the "details" category.

Windows and Intel Itanium: The Slow Divorce

Microsoft has more or less jumped ship from Intel's Itanium project. The company says it will keep supporting existing Itanium architecture for the better part of a decade, but Server 2008 R2 will be the last stone in the road. It marks yet another prominent drop-out from the silicon king's years-late project.
It was perhaps one of the most drawn-out, painful launches in Intel's (Nasdaq: INTC) long history: the introduction last February of Tukwila, the latest generation of its Itanium 64-bit processor architecture. Not everyone in the Itanium Solutions Alliance hung on for the five-year ride, with Unisys (NYSE: UIS) having been its most prominent drop-out last year, citing competitor HP's (NYSE: HPQ) dominance in the field. Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) held on for the entire stretch; but last week, the company announced it would not lend its support to whatever the generation after Tukwila might become.

Chrome Flies Its Flash Flag

Google has bundled a Flash plug-in with its Chrome browser, a move that makes its allegiances clear when it comes to the Flash vs. HTML5 battle. One component of that debate centers on the security obstacles posed by browser plug-ins, a problem Adobe says its working to address. As for Google, its decision to tie Flash to Chrome was met with both cheers and boos.
With Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) owning YouTube, the Internet's principal delivery system for Flash-based video, it was perhaps inevitable that the company would bundle the Flash plug-in with its Chrome browser. The announcement came recently from both Google and the team developing the open source Chromium component on which Chrome is based.

With Luxand Blink, Your Face Is Your Password

Luxand Blink! is a free product from Luxand, a maker of facial recognition and image editing software. What Blink! does is allow a PC equipped with a webcam to scan your face during the login process. If it matches a previously saved template, it will allow you to login by facial recognition instead of password. I tested it out on my own face, and then tested it using a variety of other faces, and even a headshot photo of myself. Luxand Blink correctly allowed me to login with only my real-life face and no other. You'll know it's working when a green square appears around your face and holds steady for a few seconds, followed by a successful login.

Is Flash Finally Banned from iPhones?

Apple has revised its iPhone Developer Program License Agreement changing the terms and conditions to insist iPhone applications are written in native code.
An "intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool" is now prohibited, which means iPhone developers will no longer be able to use Adobe's iPhone compiler software to help build applications.
Section 3.3.1 of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement now reads as follows:
"3.3.1 - Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited)."

How the iPad Works

Like the iPhone before it, Apple's new iPad tablet is a technological powerhouse with a multitouch-screen interface, an accelerometer that senses movement and tilt, an antiglare screen you can view from a side angle, a long-lasting battery and more. To uncover how the iPad works, you could dismantle the device and void the warranty. Instead, let me explain the embedded technology.
Apple declined to comment for this story, but I've done some digging and gathered information -- and some best guesses -- from various sources. I'll skip the hardware novelties that already exist on the iPhone, such as the oil-resistant screen coating and the accelerometer (those are covered in my previous article "How the iPhone works"), and give you the scoop on four under-the-hood technologies that, combined, make the iPad unique -- for now.

3-D Internet Forecast Within 5 Years

A technology guru at Intel Corp. predict that the internet will look significantly different in five to 10 years, when much of it will be three dimensional, or 3D.

That could come as soon as five years from now when, he predicted, there will be realistic-looking three-dimensional applications.

Child Obesity Soaring in Rural America

FRIDAY, April 9 (HealthDay News) -- In the past 35 years, the percentage of overweight or obese children in one Louisiana town has more than tripled, new research shows.
In the early 70s, fewer than one in six children (14.2 percent) in the town of Bogalusa was overweight or obese. By 2008-2009, almost half of the town's children and teens (48.4 percent) fell into those categories, according to a study in the April issue of Pediatrics.
The startling findings come on the heels of a more encouraging study, published in January in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), that found overweight and obesity rates across the United States appeared to finally be leveling off.

HIV Drugs Might Combat Two Other Diseases

THURSDAY, April 1 (HealthDay News) -- Four anti-HIV drugs inhibit a retrovirus recently linked to prostate cancer and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), say U.S. researchers.
If further investigation proves that the retrovirus xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus (XMRV) causes prostate cancer or CFS, these HIV drugs may be an effective treatment for the two conditions.
In this study, researchers from the University of Utah and Emory University/Veterans Affair Medical Center tested how effectively 45 compounds used to treat HIV and other viral infections worked against XMRV. Raltegravir was the most effective, and three other drugs -- L-00870812, zidovudine (ZDV or AZT), and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) -- also prevented XMRV replication.

China scientists show how arsenic treats blood cancer

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Scientists in China have demonstrated how arsenic -- a favorite murder weapon in the Middle Ages -- destroys deadly blood cancer by targeting and killing specific proteins that keep the cancer alive.
"Our study showed how arsenic directly targets these proteins and kills them," lead researcher Zhang Xiaowei at the State Key Laboratory of Medical Genomics in Shanghai, China, told Reuters.
"Unlike chemotherapy, the side effects of arsenic (in treating acute promyelocytic leukemia) are very low. There is no hair loss or suppression of bone marrow (function). We are interested in finding out how arsenic can be used in other cancers," Zhang said by telephone.

Yearly Chlamydia Screening May Be Ineffective for Some

FRIDAY, April 9 (HealthDay News) -- Once-a-year screening for chlamydia isn't likely to protect women from developing pelvic inflammatory disease, researchers say.
A new study has found that most cases of pelvic inflammatory disease occur in women who didn't have chlamydia infection when they were screened, which suggests they may have become infected later.
Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection in Europe and the United States. An estimated 3 million new infections are diagnosed annually, and because there are often no symptoms, many cases remain undiagnosed, according to background information provided in a news release about the study. Undiagnosed chlamydia infection may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease.

Obesity in Pregnancy Ups Risk of Heart Defect in Baby

FRIDAY, April 9 (HealthDay News) -- Obese pregnant women are at increased risk of having a baby with a congenital heart defect, a new study finds.
On average, obesity is associated with a 15 percent increased risk of having a baby with a heart defect. But the risk rises with the level of obesity. Compared to normal-weight women, the risk is 11 percent higher in moderately obese women and 33 percent higher in morbidly obese women.
In general, women who were overweight but not obese had no increased risk, said the researchers at the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the New York State Department of Health.

CDC: Cigarette taxes rose in 14 states last year

ATLANTA – Fourteen states, the nation's capital and the federal government hiked their cigarette taxes last year, but health officials worry that tobacco company discounts are keeping prices down.
State increases ranged from 10 cents per pack in North Carolina to $1 in Connecticut, Florida and Rhode Island. Meanwhile, manufacturers devote billions of dollars on marketing and on promotions to reduce cigarette prices.
"The industry is aggressively moving to undercut and blunt these taxes," said Terry Pechacek, associate director for science in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Office on Smoking and Health.

Achoo! Pollen at its worst in years in many areas

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Pollen: It's on your car, in the air and especially in your sinuses.
From Florida to Texas to Colorado, 2010 is shaping up to be a monster of an allergy season. The words "pollen" and "allergy" are among the top 10 trending topics on Twitter in several U.S. cities. Everywhere, it seems, is covered in a fine yellow dust that irritates our lives. Experts say it's the worst they've seen in years in many areas.
"It's wicked bad this year," said Dr. Mona Mangat, an allergy specialist in St. Petersburg, Fla., who can't recall a worse year in the six she's worked there. "We're just overwhelmed with patients right now. We're double- and triple-booked with new patients, trying to work people in because we know how much people are suffering."

British doctors use inert gas to save baby

LONDON – British doctors say they have used an inert gas to prevent brain injury in a baby boy who was born in critical condition.
The treatment with xenon gas is experimental and has not been used elsewhere, the doctors at St. Michael's Hospital in Bristol said Friday.
When Riley Joyce was born recently, he couldn't breathe or maintain a pulse, and showed signs of brain injury.
The doctors say they resuscitated him and used xenon gas to cool his brain to reduce the risk of permanent damage. Xenon is a rare, inert gas present in normal air.

Wash. day care stayed open after E. coli found

SEATTLE – County health officials didn't close a Washington state day care for several days after children were hospitalized with a deadly strain of E. coli — because of concerns the infection would spread farther if parents took their children elsewhere.
A 4-year-old boy died after being infected at the Vancouver, Wash., center, and three other children were sickened.
The first case was reported March 19. But Clark County health officer Dr. Alan Melnick said he didn't shut down Fletch Family Daycare until April 2 out of concern that other parents who used the facility could take their children to different day cares and risk exposing others.

Effective Help for Binge Eaters

Binge eating, a disorder characterized by the need to eat large amounts of food in one sitting, is dangerous to your waistline and a sign that your mental health is suffering. While binge eaters rarely overeat on a daily basis, it is the continued and persistent need and the inability to stop that are telltale signs that something is wrong.
Current treatment for binge eating, the most common of the eating disorders, includes cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy. Both treatments require specialized therapists that can be difficult to find and fairly costly should you find yourself among the uninsured. But there could be a cheaper and successful alternative.

Teens Can Overcome Genetic Obesity with Exercise

For a few, keeping obesity at bay is a breeze, for some it takes a healthy diet and a bit of will power, and for others it may take diet, will power and exercise. For those who are predisposed, due to genetics, that last factor can be crucial, and make all the difference on the scale.
Genetics play a big role in much of our development, but social influences can mold us in ways that better our lives. While you may be born with a fat mass-and-obesity-associated gene (FTO), a new study shows that you can negate the effects as a teenager through an hour a day of exercise.

Excess Weight Gain During Pregnancy Unhealthy for Mom and Baby

Women who put on too much weight during pregnancy risk not only keeping that weight after birth, but also have higher rates of complications, such as developing high blood pressure and gestational diabetes or requiring a Cesarean section. Those starting out obese are also at an increased risk for pre-eclampsia and blood clots, not to mention complications from a C-section.

Heart Patients Need to Avoid Weight-Loss Drug Meridia

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is again alerting healthcare professionals that the prescription weight-loss drug sibutramine, marketed in the U.S. as Meridia, is contraindicated in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, due to increase risk of heart attack and stroke.
Last January, at the behest of the FDA, Meridia’s manufacturer Abbott Laboratories agreed to add new contraindications on materials for the drug after reviewing additional data from the Sibutramine Cardiovascular Morbidity/Mortality Outcomes in Overweight or Obese Subjects at Risk of a Cardiovascular Event (SCOUT) study.

Google Incorporates Site Speed Into PageRank Calculation

"Google is now taking into account how fast a page loads in calculating its PageRank. In their own words: '[W]e're including a new signal in our search ranking algorithms: site speed. Site speed reflects how quickly a website responds to web requests. ... our users place a lot of value in speed — that's why we've decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings. ... While site speed is a new signal, it doesn't carry as much weight as the relevance of a page. Currently, fewer than 1% of search queries are affected by the site speed signal in our implementation and the signal for site speed only applies for visitors searching in English on Google.com at this point.' Considering the increasing dilution of high-ranking results by endless series of plagiarizing 'blogs,' brainless forums, and outright scam sites, anything that further reduces the influence of the quality of the content is something I would rather not have. Not that Google asked me."

"Phone In One Hand, Ticket In the Other"

"The NY Times reports that federal regulators plan a pilot project to test 'high visibility' crackdown efforts to curb cellphone use by drivers in two cities, Hartford and Syracuse, spending $200,000 in each city, while each state would contribute $100,000 more. The Transportation Department says it wants to send the message: 'Phone in One Hand. Ticket in the Other,' and plans on ramping up enforcement on state bans of hands-free phones by motorists, advertising the campaigns and undertaking studies to see if the efforts curb behavior and attitudes. Safety advocates say that curbing the behavior requires enforcement and education, which they say has been clearly evident in past efforts with seat belts with the 'Click It or Ticket Program' (PDF) that helped increase seat belt use to 83% nationally. 'It's time for drivers to act responsibly, put their hands on the wheel and focus on the road,' says Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who last year called distracted driving an 'epidemic.'"

How Neuros Built Their Nearly Silent HTPC

"Neuros has a blog posting discussing how they created their latest 'thin' HTPC to be nearly silent. Instead of using a net-top architecture (Atom or the like) they used a full 2.7GHz CPU and put their effort into making that nearly silent. The article talks about their efforts on fan selection, placement, control and vibration dampening. This route was chosen to 'give more headroom' for CPU hungry apps (web and otherwise) including Adobe Flash. Their solution costs $279; is this an appropriate trade-off for a device powering your TV?"

Comcast Disables VCR Scheduling In New Guide

An anonymous reader writes "Comcast has quietly launched a new on-screen guide for its cable boxes. What they're not advertising is that they've removed the ability to schedule VCR-compatible channel flipping any time more than a few hours in advance for people who don't buy the $20/month DVR service. What this means is that VCR owners are now forced to pay for Comcast's $20/month DVR service or else start their recordings manually. For us techies there might be a way around this, but ordinary VCR enthusiasts and owners of other recorders are left in the dust. Anyone know a good antitrust lawyer?"

Ex-Googler Obama Appointee Gets Buzz'ed

"Hillicon Valley reports that Rep. Darrell Issa of the House Oversight Committee is pressing White House Deputy CTO Andrew McLaughlin to explain his relationship with Google, where McLaughlin was employed as Google's chief lobbyist. 'The American people have a right to expect that White House employees are working to advance the public interest and not the interests of the lobby shops who formerly employed them,' Issa noted in the letter. 'The use of a Gmail account to communicate with lobbyists and evade transparency laws is at odds with President Obama's promises to limit the influence of lobbyists.' Concerns emerged after screenshots of McLaughlin's Google Buzz account emerged showing that a number of the search giant's top employees subscribed to the deputy Web chief's updates."
