Something For (Almost) Every Developer

"After two years of development, the new major version of Perl is now available. Notable new features are: better Unicode support, proper support for time after the Y2038 barrier, new APIs to allow developers to extend Perl with 'pluggable' keywords and syntax, warnings for deprecated features and more. From the linked post: You can get it from the CPAN right now or wait for a platform-specific release (such as Strawberry Perl for Windows)."

Why Houston could Rocket up the NBA rankings next season

Last season was supposed to be a breakout season for the Rockets – one in which the trinity of Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming and Ron Artest would combine in spectacular fashion to deliver a successful season for the franchise.

Unfortunately, it didn't pan out that way. With T-Mac and Yao injured, Artest was forced to lead the team.

This season has seen further problems. At the start of the season, Yao suffered a long-term injury, McGrady likewise, and Artest was traded to the LA Lakers in exchange for Trevor Ariza.

IPL quality must improve if it is to become cricket's flag-bearing competition

Twenty20 Cricket is fast becoming a worldwide mainstream sport, as recent viewing figures for the Indian Premier League demonstrate.

Television Audience Measurement have announced that over the course of the first 33 matches in this year's IPL, the sport has attracted a cumulative total of 130 million viewers.

Although the competition is only in its third year, it has already overtaken all other sporting events to become the biggest hit with audiences in India. While the IPL's success in its homeland has not been entirely replicated abroad, it is definitely growing.

How Harry Redknapp and Spurs have pulled the wool over everyone's eyes

Everything looks rather rosy for Tottenham Hotspur at present. They are in the semi-final of the FA Cup where they face a Portsmouth side in deep trouble at the bottom of the Premier League.

They are one point from the fourth Champions League place. Everyone seems to think Harry Redknapp is their uncle.

Yet people don't seem to ask the same questions of Spurs that they do for all other teams. Tottenham spend massive amounts of money every season - especially in comparison to Liverpool and Arsenal, and perhaps only less than Manchester United and City, and Chelsea.

Spin doctor: O'Neill must rotate for Aston Villa to endure Premier League

Aston Villa fans could be forgiven for a collective feeling of déjà vu. After playing rather brilliantly in the first half of the 2008-09 season, they fell away as the long season began to take its toll.

It was all going rather well until March 2009, when a sudden disastrous streak of four Premier League losses in a row left them with no chance of the fourth UEFA Champions League place. Martin O'Neill, in fact, only won his first March games in charge of Aston Villa this season, in one of the stranger statistics around.

Sports Update: Masters recap, Red Sox-Twins in new stadium

It has been an agonizing recent stretch for Phil Mickelson. His wife, Amy, and his mother, Mary, are battling breast cancer, and as Golf.com's Cameron Morfit reports, Mickelson has flown to Houston for treatments, even enlisting one of Amy’s doctors to caddie for him. Yesterday, with his family by his side at Augusta National, Mickelson won his third Masters title, defeating Lee Westwood by three strokes.

And what of Tiger Woods, who finished tied for fourth with K.J. Choi. "Woods wouldn't say where he'll play next — options include the Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte, the flagship Players Championship at Sawgrass (where he last visited to perform his televised mea culpa), or the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, in early June," says SI.com's Gary Van Sickle. "He would say only that he's taking some time off to re-evaluate things. What things? He didn't say." The sports world takes a breather after a busy weekend. Some highlights on what to check out today (all times Eastern).

Sports: What risks does the H1N1 vaccine carry?

What is it? A vaccine developed by GlaxoSmithKline. One dose is expected to immunize a person against the H1N1 virus. Ontario is recommending that children under 10 years old get two half-doses, a minimum of 21 days apart.

What additives are in the vaccine? The vaccine contains an adjuvant, or a compound that boosts the immune system, making the vaccine more effective. The H1N1 vaccine marks the first time Canada has licensed a flu vaccine containing adjuvant; in Europe, adjuvanted flu vaccines have been used since 1997. The adjuvant in Canada’s H1N1 vaccine is derived from squalene, a natural oil extracted and purified from fish.

Derby field still a work in progress

The field for this year's Kentucky Derby picked up two new shooters Saturday when the previously unheralded pair of Line of David and Stately Victor pulled off upsets in the Arkansas Derby and Blue Grass, respectively. But the prospective field for the Derby on May 1 will be in flux right up to entry time on April 28, both because there are currently more than the maximum number of 20 horses who are being pointed for the race and there is uncertainty over the prospects of some horses currently in the top 20. The most notable question marks surround Noble's Promise, who was fifth in the Arkansas Derby, and Interactif, who was fourth on Polytrack in the Blue Grass. Both are in the top 20 in terms of earnings, so if they were to drop out, that would allow horses on the outside to get in. If more than 20 horses enter the Derby, the criteria to determine the starting field is earnings in graded stakes races.

he NBA draft pool just keeps growing, with three more early entrants announcing their decisions Monday.

North Carolina forward Ed Davis will also leave school two years early. The 6-foot-10 Davis missed his team’s last 13 games with a broken wrist.

R.I.P Meadowlands, 1981-2010

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The young fellow who scored the final NBA points at the Meadowlands was surprised to hear that he shares the same last name with the guy who scored the first two points at what was then known as Brendan Byrne Arena.

Surprised, but not dumbfounded.

Because if there is one thing Terrence Williams learned in college from Louisville coach Rick Pitino, it was to respect the elders, including former Net Buck Williams, who made it possible for Terrence's generation to earn millions.

"He would talk about all the older guys he thought were great, Buck Williams, Bernard King, Junior Bridgeman, Dr. Dunkenstein (Darrell Griffith), stuff like that. So you've got to get a little history class before you actually get to play for him," Williams said.

Sports Waves: CBS mostly stuck to game plan for Masters coverage

AUGUSTA, GA. -- A few days before the start of the 74th Masters golf tournament, CBS Sports and News President Sean McManus said that his network was "not going to pull any punches" in its coverage of Tiger Woods, who was making his return to golf after a five-month absence in the wake of his now well-documented off-the-course transgressions and precipitous fall from grace.

On the same conference call, Lance Barrow, the executive producer for CBS golf telecasts, also insisted the coverage will be "just like normal on Saturday and Sunday. We will cover a golf tournament. It will only be what the story lines are. I don't anticipate doing anything different than what we normally do."

Bryant Gumbel marks 15th year on `Real Sports'

Events such as the Masters golf tournament remind Bryant Gumbel why he does "Real Sports" on HBO.

The monthly newsmagazine marks 15 years on the air this week, standing even more alone as a home for strong television journalism than it did in 1995. Gumbel, its host, suggests the deals that media companies make to televise sporting events -- for example, CBS and ESPN for the Masters -- keep competitors largely out of that business.

A phrase he can't stand is "broadcast partner."

New overpass opens: Seattle sports fans won't cross train tracks anymore

No longer do sports fans in Seattle cross the region's busiest freight-train tracks to reach Seattle Mariners, Seahawks and Sounders FC games.

Contractors for the Washington State Department of Transportation sealed off the crossing at Royal Brougham Way South at 11:30 a.m. Monday, putting an end to a hazardous era in the city's major-league sports.

From now on, pedestrians, cars and bicycles travel on a new two-lane overpass that rises from Brougham across the north-south trackway, then spirals down to surface level at Fourth Avenue South.

Twins can get used to the outdoor life

MINNEAPOLIS -- Despite a $550 million price tag, the Minnesota Twins' new ballpark has some drawbacks compared with the Metrodome. For one thing, the box seats are lower, closer to the field, allowing the players to better hear drunk, balding, 300-pound men yell that they need to get the piano off their backs.

"They're down closer, so you can hear a lot more one-liners than we did in the Metrodome," manager Ron Gardenhire said with a smile. "And if something goes wrong, we'll definitely hear a lot of one-liners."

Another issue is that outfielders can no longer say they lost a fly ball against the dirty Teflon roof or in the lights hanging from the ceiling. Ex-Twin Marty Cordova would have been at a complete loss, though he probably could have claimed he lost the ball in the sun. "You can use that now," center fielder Denard Span said. "You couldn't use it for 30 years here, but you can say 'I lost it in the sun' again. That's still not a good excuse, though."

Bravo!: Microsoft Points changed for the better

All of us Xbox 360 owners have, at one time or another, found ourselves stuck with spare Microsoft Points after purchasing a game, dashboard theme, or avatar item. Annoying, right? Right!

Furthermore, we know who to blame: Microsoft. The company’s insistence on selling Microsoft Points in bundles that do not match up with prices of the online content is both crafty and frustrating.

Whereas games on Xbox Live Arcade always cost 400, 800, or 1,200 Microsoft Points, Microsoft sells its ‘currency’ in bundles of 500, or 2,100, or similarly obscure numbers. The logic is simple: people will find themselves with spare Points hanging around, and feel compelled to buy another game. It’s a little sneaky, though no doubt good for business.

Microsoft to manage Windows Phone 7 Firmware Updates

Microsoft [MSFT] have confirmed that they will be taking responsibility for providing firmware updates to Windows Phone 7 devices when the new OS launches. Right now, Microsoft leave that to the device manufacturers.

Updates will arrive on Microsoft Windows Phone 7 devices in a couple of different ways. For small updates, they will be received over the air (OTA) using either a 3G connection on the phone or the WiFi connection if available. Larger updates will be downloadable in the Zune Manager software and when tethering a phone to a computer, you’ll be able to update your device.

Microsoft to fix F1 bug

Microsoft plans to fix the 'F1' security bug that has been plaguing Internet Explorer users for six weeks in its monthly set of security patches tomorrow.

Microsoft, which will be fixing 25 security vulnerabilities in all, made the announcement through its Advance Notification Service late last week. It will release 11 bulletins addressing vulnerabilities in Windows, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Exchange.

The F1 bug was announced at the beginning of March. Detailed in Microsoft security advisory 981169, it concerned a vulnerability in VBScript, exposed on supported versions of Windows 2000, XP, and Windows Server 2003 via Internet Explorer. Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Vista are immune to the bug, which allows arbitrary code to be remotely executed on a compromised system.
