Jacqueline shows interest in Lanka film industry

It happened right in front of us — in a bid to duck the crowd who had gathered around her vanity van last week — Jacqueline Fernandez’s mobile slipped out of her hands. And before she could recover it, the device was already broken into bits.

“Let that go. It’s already beyond repair. It’s better that I get a new set for myself,” says the former Miss Sri Lanka as we sat down in her vanity van for an interview.

As the actor started talking about her upcoming film by Sajid Nadiadwala, we deflected the topic towards Sri Lanka where the film industry has almost ceased to exist because of the continuous tension.

Going It Alone at the "Date Night" Premiere

New York – Who takes care of the kids when you've got a movie to promote? When it's the premiere of "Date Night" and the stars are Tina Fey and Steve Carell, it's their other halves. For Fey and Carell worked the red carpet in front of New York's Ziegfeld Theatre on Tuesday, April 6, sans their real-life spouses; it was a work night for the pair, who are both best known for their NBC-TV shows.
Fey is the creator and star of "30 Rock," while Carell leads the insanity of "The Office," but both were ready to jump to the big screen when the comedy "Date Night" came along.

FCC official says Comcast ruling may impact broadband plan

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – A top Federal Communications Commission official acknowledged on Wednesday that the Obama administration's ambitious plan to expand broadband access could be impacted by a court ruling that limited the agency's authority to regulate operations of network providers.
Austin Schlick, the General Counsel of the FCC, wrote in a blog post on Wednesday that FCC recommendations aimed at accelerating broadband access in rural parts of the U.S. as well as connecting disabled and low-income Americans, were among the various provisions of the recently unveiled broadband plan that could be affected.

Show looks at 6 decades of Cartier-Bresson photos

NEW YORK – Born in 1908, the great French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson came of age when small, handheld cameras were giving artists and adventurers unprecedented access to the entire world. Cartier-Bresson began to travel at age 22 and didn't stop for nearly half a century, always with camera in hand.
Now the Museum of Modern Art — which like Cartier-Bresson himself did so much to define visual art in the 20th century — has launched a major retrospective of six decades of work by a man whom curator Peter Galassi calls "one of the most talented photographers who ever lived."

Roman Polanski attorneys plead to end case

LOS ANGELES – Roman Polanski's lawyers have filed a last legal volley in a California appeals court, saying that the 33-year-old sex case and its lengthy delays have been an assault on the state's judicial system.
The attorneys said in papers filed Tuesday that the court should order an investigation of judicial misconduct in Polanski's original case and that the Oscar-winning filmmaker should not have to pay for it — an indication that he is running out of funds.

Rescuers may enter West Virginia mine on Thursday

MONTCOAL, West Virginia, April 8 (Reuters) - Rescuers could begin searching a West Virginia coal mine on Thursday for four miners missing since a blast killed 25 others in the largest U.S. mine disaster in a quarter century, officials said.
After more than two days trapped in the Massey Energy (MEE.N) mine, authorities said the missing miners were only likely to be alive if they had made it to a refuge chamber stocked with several days worth of food, water and air.
Deadly gases in the Upper Big Branch mine were falling toward levels safe enough for rescuers to venture 5 miles (8 km) underground to check two refuge chambers, said Kevin Stricklin of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.

H1N1 Vaccines Sit Unused, May be Destroyed

Nationwide it's been reported more than 71 million doses of H1N1 vaccine may need to be destroyed.
The Wisconsin state health department received nearly two million vaccines. It doesn't know for certain how many remain among local health departments.
So far, though, more than 378,000 doses of the nasal mist have been disposed of because they expired. And it's only the beginning.
It wasn't even six months ago when health departments couldn't get their hands on enough vaccine or when the rush was on to get it.

Rush Limbaugh is striking back at President Barack Obama. On Friday, the nation's top-rated radio host hit back at Obama, saying the president isn’t telling the truth and doesn't have the support of the American people. The controversy started Thursday, when Obama used an interview with CBS' Harry Smith to level a broadside at Limbaugh and Fox News host Glenn Beck.Smith asked Obama if he is “aware of the level of enmity that crosses the airwaves and that people have made part of their daily conversation" about him, including being called a Nazi and socialist.Obama shot back, "Well, I think that when you listen to Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck, it's pretty apparent, and it's troublesome, but keep in mind that there have been periods in American history where this kind of vitriol comes out."

Cedeno's walk-off single carries Pirates

PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates' bullpen set the stage, and Ronny Cedeno came through on cue. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Cedeno's RBI single broke a string of eight scoreless innings for the Bucs' offense to give the club a thrilling 4-3 walk-off win over the Dodgers in front of 31,061 at PNC Park on Wednesday night.
The inning started with a gift from Dodgers second baseman Blake DeWitt, who fumbled a routine grounder off the bat of Lastings Milledge. After Jeff Clement moved Milledge to second with a sacrifice bunt, Dodgers reliever Ramon Ortiz walked the next two hitters to load the bases for Cedeno. Pittsburgh's starting shortstop then worked out of an 0-2 count and delivered the game-winning RBI single to left-center.

Saved! ‘Idol’ judges prevent shocking cut

Ryan Seacrest promised a surprise at the beginning of Wednesday’s “American Idol” results show. Sometimes that’s a relative term and means, “We’re going to actually end the show on time this week,” or “We spent the extra couple of dollars to make sure all of the microphones work.”
But give him credit — this time he meant what he said.
Michael Lynche the lowest vote-getter? Really, America? I mean, he wouldn’t be my preference to win this right now, or even to make the final, but no love at all?

Comcast ruling raises questions on FCC regulation

At first glance, Tuesday's federal court ruling on Comcast looked like a clean win for the cable giant and for competitors including Time Warner and AT&T. The court, after all, ruled that Comcast could regulate high-speed Internet traffic over its own system and that a company that wanted to push its content through Comcast's pipelines could not.
But the ruling might be only be the beginning of a long campaign between Internet service providers and companies such as Skype, Google and Microsoft. The outcome is far from certain.

At some point in all the euphoria, you may also have wondered whether this device is just a trophy or something you can actually use.
Such self-doubts can be easily cast aside, providing you delve a little more deeply into the App Store than the Top 100 list — and are ready to open the wallet again.

Japan
Tokyo's Nikkei index .N225 slipped 0.8 percent to 11,204 points as a stronger yen provided investors an excuse to cash out after the market reached an 18-month high earlier in the week.
But many market watchers saw it as only a mild correction, pointing to expectations for improving corporate earnings and continued strong economic growth in much of Asia.

In move for nuclear-free world, Obama will sign arms treaty with Russia

WASHINGTON — President Obama is taking the first major step in his push toward a nuclear-free world, returning to Prague to sign the kind of arms-reduction treaty with Russia unseen for nearly two decades.
The deal goes beyond modest arsenal reductions, offering Obama a chance to repair soured relations with Moscow and pursue more dramatic cuts in global nuclear weapon stockpiles.
The new treaty, to be signed today by Obama and President Dmitry Medvedev, will shrink both nations’ arsenals of strategic nuclear warheads to 1,550 over seven years, about a third less than the 2,200 currently permitted. It was a year ago nearly to the day, also in Prague, that Obama outlined his agenda to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in US security strategy, with a long-range goal of eliminating nuclear arms.

Perhaps it was a middle-aged man with difficult hair who spends his whole day sitting behind a desk.
However, Conan O'Brien, he who made so many feel sad that he was being given a lot of money not to work, seems to have decided that he will become America's most future-focused, Web-aware middle-aged man who sits behind a desk.

Let's not create a cyberbullying panic

Recent stories in the press about teenage cyberbullying and real-world bullying are sickening. It's hard to know how much cyberbullying contributed to her decision to kill herself, but the case of Phoebe Prince brings tears to my eyes. The South Hadley, Mass., 15-year-old was reportedly the brunt of repeated cruelty at the hands of classmates (six of whom are now facing criminal charges) until she put an end to her life.
There is also the recent cyberbullying case of Alexis Pilkington, a 17-year-old girl from Long Island, N.Y., who committed suicide last month after being taunted with cruel comments on the Web site FormSpring.me. Some of those comments reportedly even continued after her death.

Your kids will use touch screens in 2015

Apple's touch-screen iPad tablet has only been out for a few days. But a study has found that by 2015, the majority of kids under age 15 will be using computers that feature a touch-screen display.
According to market-research firm Gartner, the younger generation could lead the way in touch-screen computing. The firm said it believes about 50 percent of the computers that will be bought for kids aged 15 or younger in 2015 will feature a touch screen. In 2009, that figure stood at just 2 percent of PCs.

What's in store for Apple iPhone OS 4.0?

iPhone OS 4.0 is on its way. There have been hints that we'd see the next version of the software that powers the iPhone and iPod Touch soon, and on Monday Apple sent invitations to a media-only preview of the software, inviting us to "get a sneak peek" at iPhone OS 4.0. Apple isn't going to let on what's in the updated iPhone software until then, but there's been some buzz recently about what Apple might have in the works.
When version 4.0 of the software will be available for download still isn't clear. Thursday is likely just an overview of new features, though Apple might give at least a time frame for the software's release. The best guess is that it will coincide with the release of new iPhone hardware, which has happened in late June or early July every year since 2007.

Cloud computing risks outweigh reward

Though cloud computing is often touted as a cost-saver for companies, IT pros still have lingering doubts about the safety and security of working in the cloud.
Around 45 percent of IT professionals recently surveyed by the ISACA (formerly known as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association) said the risks involved in cloud computing outshine any benefits. A global organization focused on the auditing and security of information systems, the ISACA conducted its first annual IT Risk/Reward Barometer survey (PDF) in March.

Photographer groups sue Google over Book Search

As a judge debates the final outcome of Google's settlement with book publishers and authors, photographers are ready to prolong the debate.

The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) filed a copyright-infringement lawsuit Wednesday against Google, claiming that Google's Book Search project was undertaken without negotiating rights to their images with the photographers. That's the same argument originally leveled against Google in 2005 on behalf of book authors, who wound up settling with the company in 2008.

HP says new device could revolutionize chips

Hewlett-Packard scientists on Thursday will report advances demonstrating significant progress in the design of a new class of diminutive switches capable of replacing transistors, as computer chips shrink toward the atomic scale.
The devices, known as memristors, or memory resistors, were first conceived in 1971 by Leon O. Chua, an electrical engineer at the University of California at Berkeley, but they were not put in effect until 2008, at the HP lab here in Palo Alto, Calif.
They are simpler than today's semiconducting transistors, can store information, even in the absence of an electrical current and, according to the new report in Nature, can be used for both data processing and storage applications.

Parallels aims to ease move from XP to Win 7

Parallels, the company best known for a product that lets Apple users run Windows side by side with Mac OS X, thinks it has found another good use for its virtualization technology.
The company has quietly been working on a product that uses virtualization to ease the sometimes painful upgrade process going from Windows XP to Windows 7, CNET has learned. The new product, which will work for both those upgrading an existing machine to Windows 7 or those buying a new PC, uses virtualization to ensure that older programs can smoothly run on the new operating system.

More details on Microsoft's free Office

Microsoft has said that, starting with Office 2010, it will allow computer makers to bundle in a limited version of the product onto new PCs. However Microsoft has shared relatively little about Office Starter 2010, the product that will replace Works at the low-end of Microsoft's productivity lineup.
Over lunch on Wednesday, Chris Capossela, a senior vice president at Microsoft, shared a little more about what users can expect when they open up Office Starter.

As previously detailed, the product includes scaled-down versions of Word and Excel and is free for consumers, but does include advertising. Capossela said that the ads will change every 45 seconds, but for the foreseeable future the pitches will all be for Office itself. The ads will never be based on the content of one's document, he said.

A Year's Further Research On an Espionage Network

"Last year researchers discovered a giant electronic spying operation they dubbed GhostNet. Now, after a further year's worth of research, Infowar Monitor has released a new report. The report (Scribbed PDF) documents a complex ecosystem of cyber espionage that systematically targeted and compromised computer systems in India, the Offices of the Dalai Lama, the United Nations, and several other countries. While the servers are in China, the report's authors say that there is 'no evidence in this report of the involvement of the People's Republic of China or any other government in the shadow network.' Furthermore, the 'intruders even stole documents related to the travel of NATO forces in Afghanistan, illustrating that even though the Indian government was the primary target of the attacks, one gap in computer security can leave many nations exposed.'"

Apollo 13 Mission Manual Pages To Be Auctioned

"On April 13 — the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 13 accident — Bonhams in New York City will auction off pages from the Apollo 13 mission manual, with handwritten notes by flight commander Jim Lovell. I'm thinking the chances of actually outbidding a rich space enthusiast are slim to none, but having a chance at owning a piece of spaceflight history should be popular nonetheless."

Man-Made Atomic Clocks the Best In the Universe

"The widespread belief by astrophysicists that pulsars and white dwarfs are the best clocks in the universe is wrong, say two Australian physicists. John Hartnett and Andre Luiten from the University of Western Australia have recently shown that man-made terrestrial atomic clocks take the crown, contrary to numerous claims in astrophysical literature that the natural timing provided by pulsars and white dwarfs is the most precise. The preprint of their paper, available on the arXiv, shows that terrestrial clocks exceed the accuracy and stability of the astrophysical 'clocks' by all sensible measures, in some cases by several orders of magnitude."

Wall St. Trading Servers To Power Off-Hour Clouds?

"As cloud computing gains traction, some Wall Street firms running armadas of servers to power high-frequency trading operations are contemplating leasing out their excess computing capacity after the trading day ends at 4 p.m. 'Once 4:30 rolls around, we don't need those machines,' said one CTO of a market data firm. 'There may be an opportunity there.' A similar revelation led to the creation of the cloud computing operation at Amazon.com, which built its infrastructure to handle peak Christmas-season loads that lasted just a few weeks each year."

Photographers Want Their Cut From Google's E-books

"The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and several other visual artist groups are suing Google over its digitization of of millions of books, claiming copyright infringement related to images within the books. The photographers initially wanted to be included in the authors' and publishers' class action suit, but filed their own suit after that request was denied. Google and others assert that images are only included in the digital copies when permission has been obtained from the copyright holder."

Linux: Ubuntu Claims 12 Million Users — Before Lucid

"It's always a challenge to try and figure out how many users a particular Linux distro has — but Canonical is now providing a new figure for Ubuntu that is 50 percent more than what they were claiming just 18 months ago. 'We have no phone home or registration process, so it's always a guesstimate. But based on the same methodology that we came up with for the 2008 number, our present belief is that it's somewhere north of 12 million users at the moment," Chris Kenyon, vice president for OEM at Canonical, told InternetNews.com.' Just in case you were wondering, Fedora still claims more — actually almost double, at 24 million."

HP Reports Memory Resistor Breakthrough

"Hewlett-Packard scientists on Thursday will report advances demonstrating significant progress in the design of memristors, or memory resistors. The researchers previously reported in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that they had devised a new method for storing and retrieving information from a vast three-dimensional array of memristors. The scheme could potentially free designers to stack thousands of switches on top of one another in a high-rise fashion, permitting a new class of ultra-dense computing devices even after two-dimensional scaling reaches fundamental limits."

Rupert Murdoch Hates Google, Loves the iPad

"The Register reports that News Corp boss Rupert Murdoch, speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, reiterated his disgust at how search engines handle news and called on old media to rethink how their stories are distributed on the web. 'It's produced a river of gold, but those words are being taken mostly from the newspapers,' said Rupert. 'I think they ought to stop it, that the newspapers ought to stand up and let them do their own reporting.' Murdoch added that the iPad was a 'wonderful tool' for listening to music, watching videos and reading newspapers. 'It may well be the saving of the newspaper industry,' by making it cheaper to distribute content to a broader audience, Murdoch said. 'I'm old, I like the tactile experience of the newspaper,' Murdoch said. '(But) if you have less newspapers and more of these, that's OK. It doesn't destroy the traditional newspaper, it just comes in a different form.'"
