Sports: What risks does the H1N1 vaccine carry?

|

What is it? A vaccine developed by GlaxoSmithKline. One dose is expected to immunize a person against the H1N1 virus. Ontario is recommending that children under 10 years old get two half-doses, a minimum of 21 days apart.

What additives are in the vaccine? The vaccine contains an adjuvant, or a compound that boosts the immune system, making the vaccine more effective. The H1N1 vaccine marks the first time Canada has licensed a flu vaccine containing adjuvant; in Europe, adjuvanted flu vaccines have been used since 1997. The adjuvant in Canada’s H1N1 vaccine is derived from squalene, a natural oil extracted and purified from fish.
